1. Reading (Individual, 10-15 minutes): Read the resources on web usability and web page design below.2. Discussion (In-Class Team):
(1) What do you see as some of the most important issues in web page usability regarding the following three U's
- A. usability
- B. usefulness
- C. understanding
(2) What are some of the tips for do's and don'ts regarding the web page design, specifically the text, color, image, frame, etc. discussed in Ritter's and Web Page Style Guide?
(3) Evaluate the IST web site using the guidelines on web page usability and usefulness.
- A. What is right with the site?
- B. What is wrong with the site?
- C. How can you improve the site?
3. Personal Web Page Improvement Design (Individual). This assignment will be beginning of another personal web page design.
Now that you have learned something about web page design guidelines and principles. Think about how you can incorporate those guidelines into your own personal web page design. That means, you will need to improve your personal web page by redesigning it. I want an 1-page document from you including the following:
- A. discussion of the theme, purpose or objectives of your web site.
- B. discussion how you are going to communicate your themes, objectives and purposes to other people, through the use of text, graphics, and other media (e.g., audio and video clips).
- C. a site map (hand drawn or typed) showing the organization of folders and the files.
Tasks Due: Task 2 and 3 are due at the end of the lab. Please submit a hard copy only.
- To be able to evaluate the usability and usefulness of a web site
- To be able to incorporate the web page design guidelines into personal web site and web page project
There are both numerous web-site evaluation checklists available and also many sites that discuss what good (web) design is relative to bad (web) design. Here are two pertinent web site URLs (and I expect that you will find others):

This lab is worth 0.75 points, 0.5 points for the team work, and 0.25 for the individual work. Please check the lab page for the grade.
