Speaker: Pan Shi Title: Security Indicator Design in Web Browsers Abstract In this study, we aim at providing conceptual and empirical insights to the design of security indicators in web browsers. Using a survey study, we explore the needs and concerns of users, resulting in a set of design considerations for better Extended Validation (EV) certificate indicator design. Drawing on the affordance theory, we propose affordance-based principles for the design of web authentication indicators. Following these principles, we present a new design for EV certificate interface in the Firefox browser. We then conduct a qualitative study to evaluate three different versions of EV indicators. Our findings offer some implications for the design of more effective web authentication indicators in web browsers.
